Here's what I made while enjoying this week's rainy day weather. This is a Patch Abilities design. Purple Cone Flowers is the name of the pattern. It is a narrow 6" by 21" wall quilt. I will show you the cute wire hanger once it's bound and ready to hang.
This is a raw edge fusible web project. I don't like the way that the edges fray when I sew the blanket stitch around each piece. I have no idea how to avoid this problem other than using needle turn applique.
If any of you have a better way to do this, I would love to hear about it. The flower petals are cut as one piece which makes "real" applique difficult for this design. Julia, do you think the Kim Diehl method could work?
Happy Quilting!

Very nice! I like it :o)
ReplyDeleteOh, I do like your project!
ReplyDeleteIt would be a little tricky pressing back all of the curves, but yes, I do think that it could be done her way. You might could even adapt it a little and do each petal separately. That is one thing that she taught us, was to adapt a pattern to make it work for you. This is sooo cute!
ReplyDeleteI love the old shoe! So good to see you working in the sewing room again!
That is awesome. Just like something planted on my deck! :)
ReplyDeleteThis is great, aren´t the edges supposed to fray a little when you use this method?
ReplyDeleteCute! I love the boot at the bottom :)
ReplyDeleteI did some leaves using the buttonhole stitch; first just the raw edge and very close BH stitches. The next quilt that I made again with leaves, I did the needleturn and then BH stitches on top and I was much happier with the look. Love your hanging, though and especially that old boot!
ReplyDeleteSuper cute! I just tried a little applique and used a small zig-zag over the edge to avoid the fray :) I would love to know if you have a good solution.
ReplyDeleteThis is very cute! Can't wait to see it with the hanger.
ReplyDeleteVery cute design, the raw edge method is suppose to give you that "frayed" look, so that once it's washed it will fray up a little. I think Julia's idea is a good one.
ReplyDeleteinteresting question...i was curious about this too. good info in the comments. thanks.
ReplyDeleteok that boot just makes that little quilt ... very very cute!
ReplyDeleteI am no help on the applique situation, I basically only do hand blanket stitch or machine blanket stitch applique... but I bet some of the other gals will have some ideas!
What a cute wall hanging, I love the boot. Applique is one of my favorite things to do. I use Kim Diehl's way of applique. It works good. I am glad to hear that your friend Bob is feeling better. I am thinking about coming to the quilt show in Duluth next year. Thank you for the info. I have been hearing wonderful things about the Duluth show. People are telling me it is the best one in Minnesota. This year it was in Rochester.
