Pepe Le Pew

PEW!! Can you guys smell that?

It's 10:30: PM. I am getting the household settled for the night, I am tired and so ready for sleep, but before I could call it a night I had to take Lucy outside. I heard the growl, then snarling, OMG, called her back, it's pitch black out there, I can't see a thing! She came back. YAY! A moment later I smell skunk. Oooh crap!! I checked Lucy, smelled nothing, thought we had dodged a bullet, so in the house we went...two seconds into the house it hit. Imagine my surprise to discover that she had been completely sprayed by a skunk. OMGosh!!!!!!!!!!!!! How could I not smell it on her BEFORE I let her in the house?! Apparently I had been so skunked along with Lucy that I could no longer detect it on her. Okay...UCKY UCK!!!!!!!!!

There was Tom's blend of peroxide, baking soda and dish detergent to bathe the dog in, then a second bath to clean off that cleaning solution and (finally) with that the washing away the lovely aroma of skunk. Still had to dry the dog the best that I could before depositing her in a crate, less then comfy nighttime accommodations. Lucy doesn't usually spend her nights shivering and frightened. To add insult to injury she is banished to the basement where she has never had to spend a night. This was probably worse for her than the skunk and bath.

And the house...I managed to fill the house with skunk stink while I was taking care of Lucy. Oh for Pete's sake, what was I thinking? Much floor cleaning, airing out the house, washing myself, the shower, bathroom and loads of rugs, towels, anything and everything that Lucy and I came in contact with needed cleaning. Was 2:00 AM when we headed off to bed, thinking the problem was under control and feeling exhausted...but I could still smell skunk! The scent was in my throat and nose ~ I cannot say UCK!!! enough.

We did finally get some sleep, only to wake up to continue the cleaning of towels, etc. To my great joy and relief we woke to a morning where we can throw open every single window to let the cool air finish airing our house. Lucy is now content with her breakfast and is sound asleep in her favorite sunny spot by the door. Tom has his feet up, he's reading the paper and wondering if his legs can possibly swell to a larger size? He's doing well, I think, he's not sure...

I am overdone, still smelling a skunk, but satisfied that all will be set straight by the end of this day. All I really want is to curl up in my favorite sunny spot, to enjoy a cup of tea and maybe a little snooze...move over Lucy!

PS: This is the second time Lucy has been sprayed this summer...no, they never learn their lesson about skunks!

OMG! What timing to be skunked!! But then there never is a good time, right? Geez...Louise...just when you were heading off to bed and with all else! Someday....later down the road....way down the road....you'll have a good laugh. In the meantime, get some rest...a snuggle with Lucy sounds lovely (as long as she doesn't stink!) LOL

  3. First- never heard the Dead Skunk song before, what a hoot! Second, I hope you can relax a little today. And third, I hope you never have to do all THAT again! Got to find a different place to let Lucy out on these hot summer nights!
I got sprayed once a long time ago along with my pup at the time- I'll never, ever forget how disgusting it was....

  10. Oh my...I couldn't help but laugh when I read your post even though it was a really awful thing to have happen any time of day, especially in the middle of the night. Wanted to let you know about a little remedy my folks had for the "skunked dog" issue. They had a family of skunks livinging under a shed in the back yard of their property and every time dad went out ready to evict them, they had little baby skunks (kits?) and he didn't have the heart to kill them. Finally did get animal control to trap them for him. However, I digress...They had two poodles, little pesky things, but loveable all the same that were constantly and I dooo mean constantly, at least twice a week going head to head with the skunks and the dogs always lost. Tomatoe juice was a remedy an old friend suggested...???...sounded weird but he said "Put them in the tub and soak them down with tomatoe juice for a few minutes then bath them with a regular shampoo." IT WORKED!!! My folks laid in a supply of jumbo cans of tomatoe juice and used about one can a week but for some reason, it kills the skunk scent. Not entirely, but truly significantly. Well enough that the only way I knew the dogs had gotten skunked when I would visit would be the tell tell juice can in the trash. If it happens again, give it a try, I know several people that swear by it, even to get it off of their own skin. I hope flinging the windows opened helped and the odor is dying out. Keeping you both in my thoughts and prayers (and Lucy too).

  11. O my! We had a skunk 'release' right under our bedroom window one night several years ago. It was so bad that we woke up coughing with streaming eyes. Kind of like tear gas (yes I have been tear gassed). It really does burn out your sense of smell and taste for a while. Now it only takes the barest of whiffs and I am up out of bed slamming windows shut. *lol*

  12. Wow, that is quite a story. Yuk is right, double yuk. On the bright side your house is now spotless. Lucy is a pretty cute dog. Around here we would only see a skunk if we went camping. My dog seems to want to keep going outside to cook her brains in the heat, so I gotta go.

  13. Well, we might have deadly spiders, snakes, bluebottle jelly fish, sharks, crocs and probably a few obnoxious creatures that I can't think of right now BUT at least we don't have skunks! And after reading your post Kim, I'm very grateful that I live in Australia, lol.
    You need some R & R now,

  16. That is such a nasty experience. Our dog got sprayed a couple of times and we bathed her with tomato juice. It worked great, but then she needed a bath to get the tomato juice out. Hope the day did nothing but get better for you.

  18. Delightful story! 8-))) I am well familiar with skunk odor. Hope you can get past all of it soon.

  19. Pew. That is one of the most discussting...and penetrating odors ever. And to have it happen at night must have been the worst.I've never had to tackle your problem (no dog!) but have heard many times about tomato juice to help solve the problem.

  21. Kim,
Oh you poor woman to have all that smell to clean up- I can smell it from here- Yuck... You have to wonder what the attraction for the animal is- or whether a pet just has to let everyone know that they are the boss of the domain - Do they think"You can do what you want to me but I am the boss" ... That would be the attitude of our dog Dusty who is a true diva - she figures that she is the boss of everything and everyone - doesn't matter what the rest of us think or know to be different. In truth, Mars is the queen bee- Just don't tell Dusty...
She might get snarly .... We have a new name for her when she gets grumpy We call her Snarls Barkley... LOL
Hope Lucy has decided that the skunks might not be her friend.
Hope Tom is recovering and feeling much better.
    Regards,
    Anna
